More philosophical than whimsical, with a surrealist bent, of course, Wilgus’s new chapbook is astonishing in it’s simplicity: “no, we can’t deny/history and print/but it seems so/long ago in the future/which will come again/I’m sure/!” (‘Dot the Connects”).
Though I didn’t find myself laughing out loud like his past attempts, I did find myself re-reading the poems, knowing there was a sweet message inherent in many of them; and sometimes confusion and surrender: “the empty highway/covered with sand/in the disappearing curve/reminds that at last/we don’t know where we’re going,” (‘Starless’). Sweetly written, a good effort.
