I won't claim to be an expert on the literary career of seasoned poet/editor John G. Hall, in fact his latest offering from Covert Press was my first experience sampling his words. Hall has been noted for writing about love, life, childhood, & politics, in simpler terms the stuff of every day life. 'Me and My Broken Mouth' continues in that vein.

Hall is a poet who lays his feelings bare on the page, wears his heart & words on his sleeve, all that...One can feel the bite of his words and his personal politics throughout 'Me and My Broken Mouth'. Having been called a political poet more than once myself, I must admit I feel a kinship with both the poet and his political views.

CONTINUED.........

These things being said, I think Hall is at his best when speechless in the face of the wonder of every day miracles, rather than the politics that get in the way of truly living our lives to the fullest, something that from reading his book, I'm sure Hall believes in very very strongly.

Would I recommend 'Me and My Broken Mouth' to readers of modern poetry? Yes and no, if you are coming to poetry expecting flowers, puppies, or modern sonnets of love, well John G. Hall may just punch you in the stomach, though if you have an appetite blood, guts, and world issues that truly matter, then you may just find 'Me and My Broken Mouth' well worth coughing up more than a little blood for.

I'll leave you with a few lines from the title poem, also my favorite from the book...

Me and My Broken Mouth

Me and my broken mouth are not worth listening to, so
listen instead to the dust and the dazzle of this
evening's constellation,
to the jumping jacks of our our hearts, to the beat-
ing mantra of the waves,
please do not listen to me and my broken mouth,
while miracles happen.

-John G. Hall

About OW!
Outsider Writers have been distributing chapbooks in dark subterranean caverns for too long. The corporate presses and literary institutions have no vision. The media is irrelevant. It's time to rise into the sun!

Our Goal: Unite the write! We will join forces where we are strong, eliminate duplication of effort where we are weak and put the power and authority over literature back into the hands of the only legitimate owners: the authors and the readers.
