There are no rules in art. Here’s proof - the artist understands exactly what that means; while the artisan hasn’t a clue. The artisan is trying his best to do what he has been told, to well-craft something in a manner prescribed. In diametric opposition, the artist defines ‘how it’s done’ blasting the rules to oblivion. But I exaggerate for emphasis, hyperbole to make an impact, a lasting impression. Whatever rules there are for art, are so few and far between as to make them closer to none, than the multitude of idiotic how-to’s so oft attributed to Strunk and White. Dr. Ronnie Shepherd did some nice work on the concept of human thought processing as it relates to reading and writing. It’s a beginning. Apparently a relationship exists between reading-writing and thought processing. The brain activity involved in those functions, seems to be similar. Hence, Shepherd’s book ‘Learning to Write, Writing to Learn.’ But we can be certain it doesn’t work in a strict linear fashion as outlined by the primitive white strunk. We don’t thought-process that way...so why in heaven or hell should we be forced to write that way? The primitive white strunk is an abomination, an annihilation of our natural creative id. That we and our children are force-fed this restrictive mind-control methodology is a wanton destruction of self, of ourselves, of what we can and should be if we would only free our minds, let loose our creativity, be artists. “Now, now, little Johnnie; your paragraphs must be arranged thus and so.” “But bitch...I don’t think that way.” Now, now, Johnnie; your thoughts must be focused and organized.” “But bitch, I don’t think that way...and neither does anyone else.” “Now, now, little boy; the primitive white strunk decided how we all should read, write, and think...many years ago.”
Mikael Covey likes to make scathing political comments at The Cherry Orchard. He’s just finished his novel aimed at stopping the war, all wars. Now if someone will just publish it... For more literary opinions, visit his blog: here. Last update : 10-02-2008 14:00
