Uncomely

She's wearing her need
on the outside
like an ugly tent dress.
My wish is for brooding.
I want her in black. Thin
and affected.
I want to watch her
across the room
exhaling bitterness,
her Dubonnet lipstick
tainting the tip of everything,
the air around her
and those who breathe her.

But this one is wretched
thick skinned and fat.
She is my Venus animus. A beautiful torso.
I will place her
in a cedar box, carry her with me
my icon,
my beloved albatross.

More Human

I’m in bed with the wrong man.
The room is painted
an ugly color
we both agree
on that. I shouldn’t complain
beggars can’t be choosy, I beg
him to stay. He leaves, I stay
he comes back and we’re there
again, between white sheets, as if
we are clean, and he tries
to find a way to make me see
things differently. He calls the color
mauve. It sounds better
for a moment. We have to face
facts; the pink carnation colored room
is putrid. I tell him that we can’t
do what we’re doing, he agrees
and pulls me closer and it’s wrong
but it’s so human.

Crushed-Out

I've read the poems
that you sent. I can’t undo
the knots of wickedness
that bind the word
together.

That said, please
remember
that life is not
so complicated.
I mean love
when I say it.
If it were otherwise
I would charge.
I just didn’t love you
that way.

You’ve stolen my Pollyanna.
Guillotine her, she's as good
as dead.

There was never
an invitation to turn me
into the iris
of unrequited sentiment.

For now there’s no way
forward, perhaps some day
we’ll find a key to the lock
that which keeps us apart.

But if we don’t, let’s just say
that it was all worth it
for the poetry.

Poet MK Chavez writes about the beauty that can be found in ugliness, the mystery of feeling bad about feeling good, little birds, big consequences. She is co-host of Acker’s Dangerous Daughters, a San Francisco reading series of Cherry Bleeds. Her work has been published online and in print. Her poetry chapbook “Virgin Eyes” is available through Zeitgeist Press. Most recent and upcoming publications include Zygote In My Coffee, Poesy, Poems-for-All, Snow Monkey, Sisters of the Page, Drown My Own Fears, and Underground Voices. About OW!
Outsider Writers have been distributing chapbooks in dark subterranean caverns for too long. The corporate presses and literary institutions have no vision. The media is irrelevant. It's time to rise into the sun!

Our Goal: Unite the write! We will join forces where we are strong, eliminate duplication of effort where we are weak and put the power and authority over literature back into the hands of the only legitimate owners: the authors and the readers.
