“real. m” By Alfaro Silenced Press www.silencedpress.com $12
The cover to this collection by Alfaro leaves one wondering before the book is even cracked. The stark white front covered in simple black type with a description of his desire for the cover art our only clue. Opening the book, one finds a multitude of clean white pages and simple black type. Do not be fooled. Alfaro’s arrangement of this collection is refreshing and interesting with alternations between haiku (yes…real haiku) and poems of all sizes. The haiku act like sorbet between each entrée of a poem, cleansing the palate of the last poem before moving to the next one. This lends it to a great forward progression taking the reader deeper and deeper into the collection until they run into a wall of bold type. The middle section of this book is a stream of consciousness poem about love and its many tendrils of connection to time and place. It overflows with emotion. This poem is not for the weak or easily distracted as it consumes 33 pages of this book. It requires a certain desire to be hurt, to keep walking through the briars though your flesh is being torn. It is a poem about that one love that has scarred each of us. It is a testament to the process of love from its inception to its end. And when this is done, he leads you back into his fanciful alternations of haiku and poems as if nothing ever happened. As if it were all a dream.
Alfaro creates a very minimalist looking book that allows the reader to come clean at the end of each poem. It makes no assumptions and gives no distractions to the words. Last update : 28-11-2007 23:12
