Comments are now turned back on. All comments submitted in the last few days are now up as well.

Recent events have prompted us to examine both the technical and policy issues surrounding allowing anonymous comments (or comments at all!) on this site. We haven’t previously had a policy on this, but then again we didn’t need one.

We’ve examined a number of options available to us. Some editors would prefer not to allow comments at all. Personally, I think comments are an important part of OW! It’s how we communicate, get feedback, get to know each other and build a community. We’ve allowed anonymous comments because a) it’s just easier for everyone and b) people should be allowed to say what they think without fear of retribution.

Unfortunately, as with most sites that allow anonymous commenting, this is easy to abuse. Most sites have a policy of not putting up with blatantly disruptive posting and OW! now feels the same.

We will still allow anonymous comments and, currently, will not require that comments get approved before they go online. We encourage members to speak their mind and get involved with their comments. However, we WILL DELETE comments if we feel they are purposefully disruptive, go against the spirit of OW! or if things are just getting out of hand. We reserve that right. Comments are a privilege we allow on the site, so let’s all try to be respectful, even if we are disagreeing. We can make commenting more restrictive to resolve abuse, but it’s just easier and more productive for everyone if we don’t abuse the privilege in the first place.

A lot of people put unpaid volunteer work into this site. We’re trying to build something, not fend off petty attacks. It’s a waste of time, it’s bad for morale, and it makes the whole scene look bad.

You’ll now notice a new ‘report’ button in the comments section. If you feel a comment is suspect for some reason, please feel free to submit a report.

Now let’s get back to pumping out that alternative magic!

So all of the recent comments have been held up in limbo, huh? I thought something funny must be going on--it's been days since some moron called me 'fascist', 'commie', 'pervert' or 'paedophile'.

About OW!
Outsider Writers have been distributing chapbooks in dark subterranean caverns for too long. The corporate presses and literary institutions have no vision. The media is irrelevant. It's time to rise into the sun!

Our Goal: Unite the write! We will join forces where we are strong, eliminate duplication of effort where we are weak and put the power and authority over literature back into the hands of the only legitimate owners: the authors and the readers.
