As some of you may or may not know, I publish and promote my own novels. I don't do the Lulu route (though there is certainly nothing wrong with that and a great option for most new indie authors), I actually design them myself and then send them to the printer to get published. Recently on my blog I've been documenting the process as I get my latest novella, Bad Attitude (about giving up on the world and working in a shitty electronics store), ready for print.

My latest post is about proofs, the first prints you get back from the printer: how to deal with them, what to do with them, what they mean, etc...

If you publish your own stuff, or are interested in doing it, it might be a fun/useful read. You can read it here:  www.leopoldmcginnis.com

Very good. I saved all three parts to my hard drive. This would be a great series to publish on CD. I hope you'll take it through to the end, marketing and all.

Yeah, I think I will. On my third book now, I think I have a bit of a hang of it, and am aware of what the pitfalls are for someone going totally independently. Maybe once I have a series I can edit them and put them together as a resource on this site or another. Other people might as well learn from my mistakes!

I just print chapbooks. I print them straight out of my computer on demand. I have colored paper for the cover and all. They're just chapbooks, not perfect bound or anything. I lay them out in microsoft publisher, and just print. Fold and staple them myself. That's another way to do it.

For all the shit Microsoft Publisher takes, it does a very good job on chaps. I didn't know that was what you used, Mike. That's the beauty of it, they look just fine.

Yeah, that's how I did my first book. In fact, with the multi-purpose home printers you get these days, as long as your book isn't over 100 pages, you can do it all on a home computer with a printer and a long arm stapler. Only problem with those is that it's difficult to get them into stores. But I'm more and more convinced it's not worth even trying to get your books into stores these days.

Yeah, and to get them in stores you need an ISBN too. I've got a smaller local bookstore I can leave my books in. Yes David, Publisher does a nice job printing books.

Publisher is just really not a good graphic design program for people with design training. But for most people it's just great and affordable, so I try not to knock it. Hell, if Adobe didn't charge $1000 for it's products, people would be using their better products!

Yeah, some stores will take stuff without ISBNs, but most won't, particularly Amazon. It's kind of 1984...

About OW!
Outsider Writers have been distributing chapbooks in dark subterranean caverns for too long. The corporate presses and literary institutions have no vision. The media is irrelevant. It's time to rise into the sun!

Our Goal: Unite the write! We will join forces where we are strong, eliminate duplication of effort where we are weak and put the power and authority over literature back into the hands of the only legitimate owners: the authors and the readers.
