Interviewed by Lit Circus editor Pat King.
1) Hey, how are you? I'm good. You? 2) What was the inspiration for your new press, Manual Publishing? No inspiration, really. I have always wanted to publish books and Manual is my attempt to do that. 2.1) What books will we see from your press? How did you find out about the authors? The authors are all people I know and consider friends. The first Manual book, Jailed By My Father, was written by my brother. Next will be a book of my own, then a book by a friend from Ohio. 2.2) Why do we need another independent press? I don't know if we do, but I'm not really thinking about it in those terms. All I know is that I want to publish these books and that if I don't do it, it won't happen. 3) Tell us a little bit about The Die, your free newsletter zine. I recently stopped publishing The Die. It was a zine in which I explored the work of philosophers and writers by examining it through my own experiences (or at least that's what I tried to do). However, it ceased being fun and became kind of like a "job," so I decided to put a fork in it. 4) In The Die, you often interpret and summarize current and past philosophers in plain style. Why the obsession with philosophy? Why do you think it's important for people to read philosophy or at least to read about it? Initially, I thought that philosophy could provide me with some answers to some problems that I was having. To put it simply, I was lacking direction and I hoped that exploring different philosophical ideas and points of view would help me find one. That didn't happen. What did happen, though, was that I learned to see the world and life in different ways, and now I am less hung up about things like finding a direction. I've learned to sit back and enjoy the ride, so to speak. That, as I have learned, is what philosophy has the potential to do for people (and I emphasize potential). That's why I think it's worth reading. 5) You recently had a child. How has that affected your writing and publishing? I now have much less time to write and publish, which is part of the reason why I've stopped publishing The Die. Having a kid has forced me to focus on the things I really want to do.
6) Anything else you'd like to add? Thanks for your interest in what I'm up to. Good luck with O.W. Last update : 07-05-2007 20:04
