About two weeks ago we asked our visitors what they thought outsider writers needed, as existing systems do not support this wide range of untapped talent. The results are below.
If writing systems don't support us, which by and for outsider writers system do MOST need?
1. A support network of outsider writers from all over, able to provide promotional help, crash space for tours, set up readings, provide expertise and advice. 7 votes: 33.3% 2. A distribution network, able to get books into stores and, better yet, more unlikely places. 6 votes. 28.6% 3. A publishing/marketing group devoted to publishing and promoting outsider writing. 6 votes. 28.6% 4. A Best of the Outside yearly journal! 150 pages! Glossy cover! Illustrations! Poetry! Ads (for outsider stuff)! 1 vote. 4.8% 5. A series to totally cool sports-like cards - collectemall! 1 vote. 4.8%
I must admit to ulterior motives in us putting up this poll. OW! has very quickly established its web presence, set out what it is and what we want to achieve. We’ve arrived successfully at our initial state so fast we haven’t had a lot of time to consider…what next?
One of our goals is to interact with our community. OW! is not by the few members that make up its inner circle, but meant to be an organic organization aimed at tapping and utilizing the skills, interests and talent of outsider writers to promote and help outsider writers. By asking this poll we’re encouraging you to take part in thinking about and helping to guide where this site goes, where our community goes. Whether you realized it or not we were actively seeking your feedback on what is important, asking ‘Are you along for the ride?’ and ‘Where should we go’ on this madcap roadtrip. The responses were fairly split between the top three answers and I’d be lying if I didn’t mention that these three things already make up the basic principles of what OW! intends to be. Although it didn’t give us a specific direction to focus on, your responses told us that we are at least thinking in the right direction…and nobody is itching for an anthology any time soon! The responses have motivated us. We’ve been pondering lately: how do we move beyond just a cool, useful website? How to we engage and use the many abilities of outsider writers out there to create something for ourselves, bigger than ourselves? I’m pleased to say that since this poll we have formalized 3 exciting projects, larger than this website, larger than ourselves, that we will be working on over the next year. It’s a bit too early to mention specifics, but I can say that they all involve, individually or collectively, the top three responses to our poll, as well as open doors for further projects and forays into the untapped and abused world of readership! Thanks for voting, and please voice your opinion in this week's ponderous puzzler of a poll. What you think (as well as what you do!) counts!
