Old Black Man Laughing At Me As I passed him I heard the guttural laugh the knee slapping the astringent mixture of the hilarious and sinister. We were partners of sorts with no formal introduction. He knew what my sorry ass had been up to. How I made that m-f mole hill into a mountain. And I better move my bone-ugly hide-- And save that chicken-shit walk that head -tilting attitude for someone who hasn't seen it before, and has time to give a good God damn. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Father Knows Best, Mother Does The Rest *From that TV series: Father Knows Best, and the 1950's at large then and even today. The bland tyranny of the cardigan sweater. His smile creased in brutal condescension. Mother corseted in apron strings. Bud with a Greaser's black defiant lock rushes to the freedom of the door. Father yells "Princess!" and she arrives dancing with the dog with an anxious, scripted girlish giggle. And don't you think think they would like to kill him ... just a little?
