Carol Novack is a native New Yorker who has traveled and written around the world.  She is a former attorney, holds a master degree in social work, and teaches lyrical fiction writing at The Women’s Studio Center.  Carol is the editor of Mad Hatter’s Review.  I caught up with Carol in Manhattan this week.

DB. Carol, I see you are a New Yorker.  By birth?

If so, tell me if you’ve lived anywhere else, where, when, why.

CN. Yes, David, I was born here and grew up near the ocean in Belle Harbor (Rockaway Beach, Western tip of Longeyeland).  I attended University of Rochester (upstate), and soon thereafter moved to Sydney, Australia; lived down under for six years during the early-late '70s.   Then I left to travel about Europe, without a destination in mind.  I resided on the island of Lesvos for a few months, in Dingwall, Scotland, for a few weeks, and dwelt temporarily in many other locations, including Vienna, Dornach, Paris, Rome, and Oslo.  I returned to NYC in 1978, never expecting to stay here long.

Pat King: Okay, I think we all have passionate opinions about this weeks topic, "What constitutes a bad writer?" It's a strange, strange thing to admit that with all the subjectivity surrounding writing and writing styles that we still have to use black and white labels like "good" and "bad." But there's a line somewhere. Where is it? What is it? When has a writer gone past "bad" and reached "good?" For that matter, when is a writer "great?"

I'm happy to be moderating this topic and I look forward to what I'm sure will be quite varied responses.

Aleathia Drehmer:  Welcome writer's to Virtual Roundtable #3. I will be taking the wheel from Pat on this one, so work with me while I get the kinks out. It seems apparent to me that movies have had a large influence over our lives in so many ways, and have given us inspiration. This week we will be discussing "What are the effects of movies on literature and how have they molded your writing?"

With the high rate of movies being made on the basis of books, do you think that today's writers gear their novels in a way that makes them easily transitioned into film? Do you think that book based films encourage viewers to turn the television off and pick up a book by that author, or have movies taken the place for the need to read?

Have fun with this one everybody!

Interviewed by David Blaine

Tim Morris is a poet, photographer and high school teacher from Georgia.  He has written several chap books of poetry.  His latest, "Forgotten Elements:
Observations of a Back Porch Philosopher” is available from LuLu Press.

DB. OK, first thing, is Tim Morris your name?  For some reason I was thinking it was Tim Didgman.  Hmmm, too many MySpace buddies perhaps.

TM. I think you are mistaking my old myspace url, didgman,
with my last name.  I use the moniker didgman because
I ply the didgeridoo.

About OW!
Outsider Writers have been distributing chapbooks in dark subterranean caverns for too long. The corporate presses and literary institutions have no vision. The media is irrelevant. It's time to rise into the sun!

Our Goal: Unite the write! We will join forces where we are strong, eliminate duplication of effort where we are weak and put the power and authority over literature back into the hands of the only legitimate owners: the authors and the readers.
