Anthology To Benefit The West Memphis Three

This just in from our friend, Misti Rainwater-Lites:

I still haven't decided on a title for the anthology. I will be taking submissions until June.  If you are interested, please send three poems and a bio pasted into the message to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it If you are not familiar with the West Memphis story, please educate yourself before inquiring or sending me poems.
WM3

My vision for this anthology is to include at least fifty poets. With three poems from
each contributor, the book will contain at least 150 pages. Depending on the base
production price at lulu.com, I will set the royalties at two or three dollars. I want to be able to send at least $100 to the defense fund. That is my goal.

If you know even a few things about the case, you know what an important fight this is. It involves every compassionate citizen not just of America but of the world. Three little boys were brutally murdered. Three dirt poor teenagers were convicted of the horrible triple homicide based on "Satanic panic" and gossip. How can we send someone to Death Row in the United States of America WITHOUT ANY EVIDENCE? Damien is on Death Row. Jason and Jessie are in for life. I want to see those three innocent men set free and I want to see them receive millions of dollars from the state of Arkansas for the pain they have suffered for over a decade. I've read that Damien has been raped in prison. I don't know about Jason and Jessie but I'm sure they've also been brutalized in various ways.

It's good to send letters to the three men. They appreciate letters of support and
encouragement. Writing letters is not good enough for me, however. I'd like to do more.
I have tremendous hope for this anthology. Please spread the word and contribute if you can. Thank you.

Swink is a bi-coastal, biannual print magazine dedicated to identifying and promoting literary talent in both established and emerging writers. We're interested in writing that pushes the boundaries of the traditional—writing that is new in concept, form or execution; that reflects a diversity of thought, experience or perspective; that provokes or entertains.

Swink publishes fiction, non-fiction, poetry and interviews, and sponsors frequent readings and events in New York City and Los Angeles. Online theme issues of fiction, essays and poetry will also be available exclusively on our website."

GUIDELINES:
We consider fiction, essays and poetry that have not been previously published in English. Please submit only one manuscript at a time (1 story, 1 essay, or 3-5 poems).  There are no set guidelines as to content or length. Submissions must contain your name, address and a telephone number where you can be reached, and must be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Simultaneous submissions are accepted provided you notify us immediately, either in writing or by email, if your work is accepted elsewhere. Please note that we do not accept submissions for the print magazine via email or fax.

We pay writers for work published in the print magazine after edits are done to our satisfaction and the piece is accepted for publication. We buy first North American serial rights, non-exclusive, one-time anthology rights, and online serial rights. Payment varies according to length and genre, but is a minimum of $25 for poetry and $100 for fiction and non-fiction (we may pay less for very short works). Authors also receive two copies of the issue in which their work appears. More information: www.swinkmag.com

Takes One to Know One features essays in which a writer, musician, filmmaker, lawyer, postal worker, football player, funeral home director, scientist, circus clown, or just about anyone, writes about someone else, living or dead, who shares his or her vocation or avocation.

Peregrinations features essays on travel or journeys.

Damaged Darlings
is a section for collaborative writing in which one author hands off a story of theirs that's been abandoned for whatever reason, to another writer they trust to complete. This experiment in literary genetics is meant to yield a final product that is superior to the original, and that, like offspring, bears the literary DNA of both its parents.

Fiction and essays should be mailed to:

244 Fifth Ave. #2722
New York, NY 10001

Poetry should be mailed to:

Image & Identity
Culture behind clothes

Appearances aren’t everything, or are they? Join us in exploring the world of self-expression. Some people express themselves through the style of clothes they wear. Clothes can express a part of who we are or the culture we represent. A lot of young women today are also becoming increasingly aware of the importance of sustainability. Are green, recycled, or eco-chic clothes a part of your wardrobe? In a time when going to the plastic surgeon is as easy as booking an appointment at the dentist, what kind of body image do young women have today? Send us your answers to these questions and your work. We are looking for original clothing designs, photographs, film, essays and more. These months are all about exploring the different ways we shape our identity (express ourselves), whether it be through our culture, the music we listen to, or the clothes we wear. How do you express yourself?

Deadline for Submissions is May 1, 2007

About OW!
Outsider Writers have been distributing chapbooks in dark subterranean caverns for too long. The corporate presses and literary institutions have no vision. The media is irrelevant. It's time to rise into the sun!

Our Goal: Unite the write! We will join forces where we are strong, eliminate duplication of effort where we are weak and put the power and authority over literature back into the hands of the only legitimate owners: the authors and the readers.
