Given who Red Emma was I should hope it was a political bookstore. Great anarchist writer she was. Probably the best.

Great write-up re Wred and Carl, two kick-ass writers. I've seen them and I can only describe the experience as extremely lively, with Wred the lit world's version of Iggy Pop. Wish I'd been able to see them at Emma's. (And Carl's Fat On The Vine is on my TBR list.)

Wred's book is great. You should check out my review of it on this site somewhere. I've only read a few selections of CC's book, but it's also high on my TBR list.

Pat-

Good writeup, but you "forgot" to mention the ULA or ULA Press (publisher of both books). Does your audience only get the portion of the story that jives with your personal grudges?

What's the deal Pat? We don't have to write anything at all. That's pretty weak to come on here and say that when we've positively reviewed both writers. This is a story about the authors first, the tour second (which we mentioned.) Sorry - it's not a blind promo piece.

Your criticism isn't only totally groundless, but disappointing.

Actually, Pat S... ULA was mentioned in the original article, but Rick Moody and Dave Eggers hacked our database and erased all mention of ULA.... what can you do, ya know.

Write whatever you want Pat. Up next: a feature article about Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris in the summer of 1961. You can mention "baseball," "homers" and the "American League" but don't bother mentioning the "New York Yankees" because you're a Red Sox fan.

Next up: The WWE-style gripes from the ULA continue, leading "Furry" Pat S. to challenge "Handsome" Pat K. to a steel-cage deathmatch. No time limits! No disqualifications! No one here gets out alive!

Seriously, what's with you guys and the sports analogies?

How's this for a compromise: we'll start mentioning you guys as soon as you buffoons start acknowledging us. Don't act like there haven't been plenty of opportunities. I keep hearing references to "the split" without mentioning what the other side split off to become! And, of course, there's all those silly statements claiming the ULA is the ONLY alternative literature in America!!!!!! hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!

You know, this is really unfortunate, because what we have is a nice piece on two authors who I think are pretty damn good and this sort of crap hurts their chances of being taken seriously - which they deserve.

they

congregate
like dead things
along the edge
of the highway
hiding in wait
for a target
of opportunity
tied to a curriculum
of confrontation
clenched fists
worn to the bloody bone
by pointless pounding
against stone
whining
sulking souls
whose hate
you cannot alleviate
no matter
whose ashes
you offer
to the wind—

rust-covered
voices of departed
artists howl
in laughter
as they look down
on this sorry
sack of discontent

About OW!
Outsider Writers have been distributing chapbooks in dark subterranean caverns for too long. The corporate presses and literary institutions have no vision. The media is irrelevant. It's time to rise into the sun!

Our Goal: Unite the write! We will join forces where we are strong, eliminate duplication of effort where we are weak and put the power and authority over literature back into the hands of the only legitimate owners: the authors and the readers.
