Hey, that weird triple backslash formatting glitch in the first line of my comment above reminded me of Hubert Selby Jr., who liked to use a backslash where an apostrophe is called for. An outsider? Oh yeah and one whose stuff can be disturbing, though eye (and mind) opening.

And while I'm on the subject, I'll mention J.G. Ballard, who started out as a pretty standard Science Fiction writer in the fifties, but has since tripped out his readers with stuff like Crash and High Rise. He's a pretty interesting example of a writer who began as an insider (published in the big SF pulps) who went underground with strange stuff appreciated by a cultish fan base, not unlike Palahniuk's.

About OW!
Outsider Writers have been distributing chapbooks in dark subterranean caverns for too long. The corporate presses and literary institutions have no vision. The media is irrelevant. It's time to rise into the sun!

Our Goal: Unite the write! We will join forces where we are strong, eliminate duplication of effort where we are weak and put the power and authority over literature back into the hands of the only legitimate owners: the authors and the readers.
