The Digital Plague

Yes, this is the third day in a row I've posted on the blog. After posting about that many times the whole rest of the year, you may interpret this as a sure sign of the apocalypse. Speaking of apocalypses, the dystopian future Jeff Somers created in his novel The Electric Church is back in a sequel called The Digital Plague.

-from “my first dear season”

It’s unfair to call anyone “the next Bukowski” because such comparisons always rob that particular author of their own niche. But fuck it I’m gonna do it and say Justin Hyde is “the next Bukowski.” Or something equally stupid like “Justin Hyde now wears Bukowski’s crown.” Just because I wanted to be the first to do it knowing full well I won’t be the last.

Meat by Erin Reardon:

Reviewed by Michael Grover

If you're looking for pretty poetry, go somewhere else, this isn't it. If you're looking for real blood, real raw poetry that just has to leave the head before it hurts someone. Erin is for you. Many may know Erin as Ms. Sally MacLennanne on myspace. Her poems are brutal and messy, and they don't hold back anything. In other words they are just what poems should be. Also her poems have an amazing rhythm to them. They just flow so smoothly you can tell this is poetry that was not meant to be contained in a book. This is poetry that was meant to be read out loud from street corners, or bars at open mics. The title Meat pretty much says it all as this is bloody and messy. It is thick for a chapbook and very nicely put together (Erin is a print shop worker by day.). I urge you to contact her at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  for details about ordering.

I email regularly with Todd Moore, but we’ve never met.

You would not think Todd Moore’s Dillinger world could possibly get darker.  Well, prepare for a light’s out.

Moore has written poetry on many themes, but the most consistent has been the grey world of crime, and in particular the life of John Dillinger, the notorious bank robber from the thirties.  Dillinger was an icon, and Moore’s long poems on Dillinger suitably iconic.  Like the gangster, they are laconic, to the point, with the threat of violence always present, and often fulfilled.  Dillinger was seen in terms of his being on the run, his weapons of choice (love that Thompson!), his “friends” like Baby Face Nelson.

In the latest chap from Moore, his take on Dillinger has swerved into the Dark Zone.  Has his view of Dillinger himself changed, or is it America?  Hard to imagine, but Moore’s poetry, at least in this chap, has grown even darker.  Dillinger is no longer quite a semi-romanticized guy on the run, lonely, a ghost to himself.  In these poems, Moore gives Dillinger a harder, darker edge.

“I am writing for ordinary people,” he told me. “I want everyone to be able to read my books. The problem with Arab literature has been that it forgot to tell stories and lost its way in experimentation. Too many novels that start with lines like ‘I came home to find my wife having sex with a cockroach.’ ”

Spencer Dew

This month I had the pleasure of talking with author Spencer Dew about his new collection of short stories entitled “Songs of Insurgency” which was released earlier this year by Vagabond Press.  It expands over many issues about how post-9/11 mania has effected the common man.  The stories move around to several parts of the country and to war torn areas as well.  Please join me in discovering more about Spencer Dew and how this book came to be.

Dreams of Sinaloa

horseback on a clay trail in jalisco
i find two vanilla cream scorpions;
one on its back and one in tears

i ask the sad scorpion if he knows
the way back to colima

his sun cracked voice
whispers between spittled sand
save me from being without my isabella

his eyes roll back and his arms
lift with the rise of my boot

i scoop the dead lovers into my palm
and bury them on the side of the
clay trail in jalisco

Connecticut Beat Poetry Festival 2008

Presented by The Spoken Word Series

Once Allen Ginsberg drew the line after having read Howl, the world was never quite the same.

And now a new time has come, where silent voices of many generations are ready to be heard once again.

The underground and other factions of artists, poets, musicians, and eccentrics are rallying together in mass exodus to commune with each other in Connecticut.

This will be the largest free poetry festival ever held in Connecticut and the Eastern Seaboard.

Who ever participates in this festival will not only network, meet publishers, see old friends and meet new ones, but will also directly contribute to making history.

This will be the Woodstock of poetry festivals.

The underlying intent, in addition to celebrating Beat poets and authors, is to take poets of minor note, regional fame with unknowns and give them strong exposure, just as was the case for our antecedents at 6 Gallery.
