KnockBack Magazine is a ‘women’s magazine’ that “can’t stand the ego destroying, advert entrenched crap that plagues the pages of Cosmo and co.” They provide an alternative, funny, advertisement free alternative. Potential contributors should contact HilaryHazard@KnockBack.co.uk or MarieBerry@KnockBack.co.uk.
*Stick to the word count. One page of KB is no more than 300 words, and we are equally pleased when we receive contributions that are less, we like one-liners as much as double page spreads.
*Get your spelling right, spellcheck is free and it saves you being mocked in the office.
*Don’t mince words, edit yourself, never use two adjectives in the same sentence and don’t add disclaimers: eg; ‘I know I may not be the best person to judge but…’
*Think very, very carefully before using an exclamation mark.
KB is only 32 pages long, so we need the contributions to fit with the format. Send proposals and pieces to HilaryHazard@knockback.co.uk

April 10th is the deadline for submissions towards their goal of 30 solid, amazing stories for their next anthology. The stories sought do not have to be about women but by talented women writers who can write about ANYTHING. Woman’s Work is about highlighting women as writers – whatever the story.

Dead End Street is an integrated publishing and motion picture production company. Founded in 1997, the company focuses on “edutainment” – i.e., products that educate and entertain. “WHY SUCH AN UNUSUAL NAME? Well, our world is filled with dead end streets. But most of us avoid them. By doing so, we pass up the untapped knowledge that is hidden there. Lessons to be learned, stories to be told, pains to be shared, loves to be rekindled – these all exist on the world’s dead end streets. We liberate this whizdom and share it with you.”

The Legendary is always open for submissions! Publishing established writers as well as the new and nervous and “would love to be your very first publication if you rock our socks off.”
Submissions should be short, sweet, to the point with a beginning, middle and end. Take us along for the ride. Make us feel it, see it, smell it, experience the jarring bumps in the road and bumps on the head, the streaming sunlight of morning and the glowing orange of evening. We want to get close enough to the characters to smell the perfume, the garlic, the gin and whiskey and beer sweating out of their pores. We want to hear their voices and see the expressions on their faces. Between all that, we demand to know not so much why they do the things they do; after all, we’re grown-ups. We demand to know what they did and how they did it.
There is no length limit, but the piece must be easily read in one sitting. We do accept previously published material if it wows us. When sending previously published material, please include the Title and Date of the first publication.
We accept short stories, creative non-fiction, blatantly fake memoirs, poetry, post genre madness, and anything else you can do with words. If you believe in it, send it along. If you submit poetry, please send between two and four poems.
Regarding non-fiction, The Legendary wants your sketches of ordinary life, nature, and people. Treat your notebook as if it’s an artist’s sketch pad. Go to your composing posture and give us a quick blast of thoughtful observation – short or long – about the way things are, the way they taste, smell, feel or just the quality of light, the atmosphere, the play of shadows and shade in an otherwise a brilliant day.
E-mail all submissions to submit@downdirtyword.com with the word ’submission,’ your name, and either ‘poetry,’ ‘fiction,’ or ‘non-fic,’ in the subject line. [ex: Submission, Your Name, Fiction] We prefer submissions to be both pasted in the body of the e-mail and sent as an attachment in .doc format.
Include a short, or at least entertaining, bio with your submission. Really. Include it. We wouldn’t ask if we didn’t want it.
The Legendary retains First Time Internet rights for all published works. All other rights revert to the author. In the event that we decide to further burden ourselves with the production of literary brilliance and expand to print, we will then retain First Time Print rights for all published works.
Apart from the sweet stories, punk-as-fuck poetry, and not-shy non-fic, we’ve added some functionality! Each author now has their own page at The Legendary. These pages link from the author names on the Bios page, and the author names accompanying work in our Poetry, Fiction, and Non-Fic pages. All work published at The Legendary will be archived in these pages with dates and issue numbers, along with author bios, and soon a pic.
Send us your pics! Send them to katie@downdirtyword.com.
Next up: Illustrations! For every story, there shall be an image. Renovating the blogspot. Contests with tiny lil entry fees and fun prizes. Our own little bookshop, to help promote the works of all our awesome authors. And as always, more words!
One last note! If your work has been accepted for publication in The Legendary and you do not see it in this issue, fear not! It’s safely snuggled up in the virtual pages of our April 9th or April 24th issues.
Thanks for all your support, your submissions, and your selves! We’d love to hear from you if you have feedback, comments, criticism, suggestions, or love. Hit us back at this address.

Side Stream Submission Guidelines:
Side Stream welcomes submissions from anyone, but especially New Zealand poets and artists. All submissions should be sent in the BODY of an email with ‘Side Stream Issue _ Submission’ in the subject line. Please specify cover art or poetry and which issue you are submitting for. If you do not follow this guideline your submission may be discarded without being opened.
Poets retain copyright of any work accepted for publication in Side Stream. However it is expected that poets will acknowledge Side Stream as having previously published the work if it subsequently appears elsewhere.
All submissions should be sent to Miriam Barr at miriam1barr16@ gmail.com.
Poetry Submission Guidelines:
Submissions of previously unpublished poetry should be less than 25 lines long (including title and line breaks). Occasionally poems of up to 50 lines will be considered, but shorter poems get preference.
Side Stream is pocket-sized, so please ensure your line-lengths are short enough to fit that – roughly 10 words per line is usually the max that will fit.
Poems should be sent in a plain font in the BODY of an email. Unsolicited attachments will not be opened and your submission will be discarded. Ensure your submissions are in the main body of the email with CLEARLY labeled titles. Include contact details and your name as you want it to appear in print with your submissions.
Side Stream is looking for CONTEMPORARY poetry that is interesting, clever and has something to say. Poetry that plays with language and form, that is rich in content and shows both attention to detail and creative flair is especially sought after – Side Stream wants something a bit different. And it wants something good.
Cover Art Submission Guidelines:
Cover art submissions should be BLACK AND WHITE and preferably drawings, as they will be photocopied and any detail with colour will be immediately lost.
Side Stream is an alternative publication (hence the title) and it is a poetry publication. So visual content should reflect these factors in some way. Cover Art submissions should fit well with the themes of the creative process, creative people or being outside of the main stream. Images should not include writing, as this would compete with the title for attention on the page. Please look at the images that have been used so far (in my pictures), this will give you a good indication of what Side Stream is looking for and is likely to choose. Abstract or expressionist art will be chosen over images of actual concrete things. Cover art submissions should be interesting to look at, aesthetically pleasing and different.
If you have a question that has not been answered here please post your question in a comment below this blog and I will answer it.
Successful submissions will be listed here on Myspace in the first week of each month and contacted via email to arrange collection of their copy. I do not contact unsuccessful submissions, though if you’d like to know why your poem or art wasn’t chosen, you are welcome to contact me for feedback. Only do so if you can cope with receiving constructive criticism.
