and then? it’s over, that’s what then.
we drank together.
there wasn’t much else to do.
you were old and dying of cancer.
i was young, and ready to die for other reasons.
we drank.
you broke alka seltzer into pieces,
and mixed it with red wine in paper cups.
Have a Hobo Cocktail, you said. It’ll give you a head ache,
and cure it at the same time.
We drank ’till you died.
then i drank alone.
then i was just alone.

I realize you probably won’t post any comments except “great work” and its infinite variations, but I have to say this poem is so much like Bukowski that even in a world of Bukowski immitators it stands out like a saliva-soaked and swollen thumb. If that’s the goal, then GREAT WORK. Of course, I know the real goal is TRUTH. Here’s the truth: Father Luke is a gimmicky eunich.

Father Luke
A friend of mine once described Father Luke’s work to me as ‘crush worthy’.
I’ve heard Father Luke described many different ways by many different people.
In the year since I’ve discovered his writing, it has become ritual for me to check his website for something new every morning while having coffee. I’m always happy when I find something I’ve not yet read.
Thank you, Father Luke, for the first year (for me) of what I hope will be many more to come.

I’ve seen Father Luke on Literary Mary. Every time he signs a post “okay” I feel strangely reassured, despite the wild eyes.
