Everybody thinks
they discovered me.
Pride kills deeper
than bullets. An aging
“poet” working in the
back of a newspaper,
counting and stacking
tons of newsprint.
While none of my fellow workers
at the table
( all at least 25 years younger ),
even read the
newspaper they work for, not to mention
poetry.
I say, between bites
of my double cheeseburger,
that my poems
usually don’t rhyme. A couple
people at the table nod.
I’m sure it answered their
silent question,
as to why I’m not famous.

Doug has been writing and publishing good poetry since before you were born–well most of you. Doug Draime was born in 1943 in Vincennes, Indiana. He began publishing in underground newspapers and the small press in the late 1960’s, while living in Los Angeles, becoming part of the L.A. poetry scene (a more extensive bio can be found at http://laurahird.com). He also writes short stories and plays. Awarded small PEN grants in 1987 and 1991. He currently lives in Oregon.
