THE BLACK WIDOW

a former friend of hers called
her the Black Widow
said she left a trail of blood
behind wherever she went

Victim of a controlling marriage
Now divorced and nearing middle-age
she celebrates her freedom
playing mind games with men
falling under her spell

She told me
she had been intimate
with many poets
that it was no big deal
like handing out flyers
at the shopping mall
and imbecile that I am
when it comes to matters of love
I went along for the ride
like a giddy teenager
riding the Big Dipper
at  Play Land by the beach
well hell,
nothing is easy
and love and poetry
is the hardest
but I can’t and won’t compete
with a long line of men:
tree trimmers yard men
and home boys
and taking the dog man
into to her kennel that night
was the beginning of the end
It felt  like a long conga line
with the mistress of ceremonies
performing yo-yo tricks
like walk the dog at intermission
sorry but I can’t play the game
never was good when it comes to pain
yours or mine and like I told you
I wish you no ill will
I’d rather see you step up to the plate
and hit a home run than strike out
I’m not your enemy
but your easy dramas
have lost their entertainment value
the memories are already fading
and soon you’ll be just another empty
space gathering dust at the
end of my bookshelf

not to be outdone by the fantastic female poets of not your bitch–the poetry series–the man cave has arrived
and we all know what that means. The man cave is always open but howls on Friday nights. Full moons are just deadly.
